Bottled water is cheap and available on the boat and most tour buses. If buying from a street vendor make sure the top is still sealed.
A hat and water is a must - even though your guide will keep pushing it - TAKE NOTICE. There is a lot of standing around in the heat.
Have plenty of low denomination Egyptian notes in your pocket for baksheesh. The locals expect a tip whenever they do anything for you - you only need to tip a couple of Egyptian pounds (about 20p)
If you do buy - bargain - it's fun and the locals expect it, even for taxi fares. If you don't like bargaining only go into shops that have fixed prices
If you like a cup of tea when you wake up in a morning - take a small kettle with plug adapter and tea bags and powdered milk. Egyptian hotels don't seem to provide these like English hotels. Room service can work out expensive with the baksheesh as well.
Don't let the shopkeepers drag you into the shop if you don't want to buy - Just say politely and firmly - No - La a in Arabic
If buying from the alabaster factory make sure you see the item you have chosen and bargained for wrapped up. People have chosen an alabaster statue and got home to find it was soapstone.
Antiseptic wipes are useful to wipe your hands after handling the Egyptian money - it has been around a long time
